Marc Jacobs Beauty Medium Mystery Bag - Fall 2017
So sorry it's been a hot minute but I am back today with some fancy things from Marc Jacobs Beauty. I had never heard of the Marc Jacobs Beauty Mystery Bag until I saw My Subscription Addiction post a link on Instagram Stories so I immediately pulled out my laptop to further investigate. As you all probably know by now, I like my luxe beauty and I can't say no to a bargain so of course I had to get one myself and see if it was any good. There's three different sizes; small (mini bag), medium (major tote), and large (big shopper) so I went with the medium since it was my first time getting one - apparently they do these about every three months or so. The small cost $29 and has a value of $46, medium cost $40 and has a value of $101, and the large cost $99 and has a value of $170. I would of loved to have gotten the large but November is coming up and I plan on doing some damage at the Sephora VIB sale so I held back. It's a bit of a gamble with mystery bags because you could end up with a bunch of items you'll never use but I rolled the dice anyways since Marc Jacobs Beauty is a brand that I am very interested in. I haven't used too many of their products previously, just the brow gel and lipstick, but have always wanted to try lots of different things so I figured even if I didn't love the colors of everything I got I could at least test out the formulas. Without spoiling it too much I will say I was very pleasantly surprised with what I received so let's get to the goods!
This color is limited edition and exclusive to marcjacobsbeauty.com. Marc Jacobs nail lacquers are supposed to give off a high shine effect, like 30 coats of lacquer, and have extreme wear. While this pale pearly pink is not the first color I would of chosen I do actually really like it. I don't have very many nude or light nail colors currently so this is a great addition to my ever growing collection. As for application, the formula is pretty thin and can go on a bit streaky. In the photo below I have four coats on and I feel like you can still see the white tips of my nails a little, even through all those coats. I have a similar enough colored opaque nail polish that I might try layering under this next time I want to put it on my nails so that I don't have to do as many coats. The brush also had a hair sticking out at a weird angle that I had to clip because it was messing up my application. It is a fairly shinny lacquer on its own but I still added a gel effect top coat to give it a super glossy finish. While I do like the color, and the packaging makes it feel super expensive, I don't think this particular color is worth $18 since it is streaky and doesn't build up well so I wouldn't suggest rushing out to buy it. I am happy to have it though and am glad I got to test out the Marc Jacobs nail lacquers since I'd had a few in my Sephora wishlist for quite a while.
I squealed a little when I saw this in the box because the Marc Jacobs Highliners are the only eyeliners that stay put in my waterline, I have a mini of the matte version in (Earth)quake. Obey-Ge is described as a pearly pale pink which I would say is accurate but it also seems a little iridescent to me with a purple shift. It's not a super obvious color on the lower waterline, I have it on in the photos below but I don't think you can really tell, but it does open up the eyes and give a more wide-eyed awake appearance. I am thrilled with this color since it's an everyday wearable color for me and it coordinates with my Diorskin Nude Air Luminizer in Pink Glow really well. These eyeliners are super pricey for what they are but if, like me, most eyeliners don't stay in your waterline they're definitely worth investing in since they have some amazing staying power.
I had always wanted to try the Marc Jacobs lip gloss but hadn't gotten around to doing so yet since I wasn't sure what color to try so seeing this in there was an excellent surprise. I was utterly terrified of the color at first because it looks quite purple in the tube but on the lips it actually pulls way more magenta and I think the gloss would work well over a number of lipsticks in my collection (particularly Tarte Rainforest of The Sea Color Splash Lipstick in Popsicle and Ofra Cosmetics Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Santorini). This stuff smells really good, quite minty, and while the texture is on the thicker side it's not super gloopy. It's a pigmented gloss without being too pigmented so I can put on just a little for a sheer wash of color or layer it on more, like in the photo below, for more of a punch of color. I love everything about this gloss; the texture, the color and the smell so I'm super jazzed to have received this item and would definitely suggest checking it out if you're into glosses.
This was the other one that got me super excited because if you saw my Top 5 Favorite Lipstick Formulas post then you'll know this formula is up there for me. Before I opened the box I hoped it was a color that I would want to wear and I'm happy to report that it is but it's about a 99% match for a color I already own, Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Kimchi (click here to see a comparison photo). I'm not fussed about it though, the Kimchi I own is a mini and this is a full sized Marc Jacobs lipstick so it'll last a lot longer. Again, wouldn't of been my first choice of color but I do like it and will get some use out of this product (especially in spring). If you haven't already checked out the Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crème lipsticks I would highly suggest doing so if you're into a cream bullet form lipstick because they're seriously awesome.
All of my products came out to the $101 value so for $40 I'd say it's a darn good deal, especially for high end beauty. I am very lucky that the colors of everything I received are colors that I can and do wear regularly but it could of gone very badly so you are taking a huge risk with mystery bags. I also like the mix of products I received, two of which I'd previously used and loved and two that were on my wishlist so I feel like I definitely lucked out. Unfortunately the mystery bags are currently sold out but today, October 13th, is the last day for a promotion discount that Marc Jacobs Beauty has going on for 20% off site wide with the code MJBFAM. If you want to try out any of these products or check out something different now is the time to do so. I was planning on getting two Marc Jacobs products from Sephora during the VIB sale next month, the Glow Stick and a Le Marc Liquid Lip Crème, but went ahead and got them now since the discount is the same (did a great job at holding back there didn't I?). If you have any questions about these products please do not hesitate to ask! I hope you enjoyed today's post and would love to hear your thoughts on the Marc Jacobs Beauty Mystery Bags - is it something you would check out in the future? Thank you so much for visiting and have a lovely weekend!
Life Update: Personal training and cycling classes are taking up a lot of the time that I usually spend shooting and editing plus I can't stay up as late as I was to write each post so that is why this one came so late in the week and why there was such a big break between posts. For now I'm only going to promise one post a week since I'm still trying to adjust to my new schedule but I'm not sure what day of the week it will end up being - it may be sporadic for the time being. I'm naturally extremely nocturnal, if I let myself I think my sleep cycle would be 4 am to noon, so not being able to stay up late to write has really thrown me off my game. Personal training is going quite well so far but my horrible ankles started acting up pretty much immediately so now I am finally taking the plunge and getting custom orthotics which will hopefully help with all the pain I've been having in my feet and ankles. I thank you all for your patience and continued support!
