Charlotte Tilbury Summer 2019 Mystery Makeup Box

FINALLY! I was just thinking here recently that it had been a while since a Mystery Makeup Box had come out and then I got an email for one from Charlotte Tilbury. Now that’s kismet. I wanted to get this one up ASAP because to me this has been the best Charlotte Tilbury Mystery Makeup Box I’ve ever received and am excited to share it. The first one I bought, Lucky Box of Makeup Magic in late fall 2017, was not bad but the spring and summer Magic Mystery Boxes from last year were pretty lackluster for me so this is a huge improvement over those. I haven’t tried everything from this box, a few I’ve tried in samples before, but from how many products I’ve used from the brand I think I have a pretty good understanding of how everything will work for me. Now let’s get to the goods!

I wanted to start with the item I like least just to get it out of the way. Not that I don’t like the Charlotte Tilbury lip gloss formula, it’s perfectly average imo, but this shade is so boring to me. All this shade will do is add shine and I like a little shimmer or opacity in my lip glosses; I would of much rather seen Blondie or Ibiza Nights in the box since both of those have a shimmer. To me there’s just not much point to a plain gloss with little-to-no color because I have lip balms that are shiny enough to serve that purpose and they’ll hydrate my lips better. Compared to my Marc Jacobs glosses this is also tiny. Charlotte Tilbury glosses contain .12 oz or 3.5 mL and Marc Jacobs contains .16 oz or 5 mL (I use this comparison since I own a lot of Marc Jacobs glosses). I’m going to pop this one up on my Poshmark and try and sell it since I know I would literally never use this shade. For the record though I do still have Portobello Girl and Seduction from a set I bought a while ago and use Seduction every once in a while since it’s a decent nude gloss with a little bit of color and stands out in my collection, I gave Red Vixen away since I never used it except for photos in a previous Charlotte Tilbury post cause red gloss isn’t really my thing. Portobello Girl is pretty similar to the Hall of Fame shade except it has the most micro fine shimmer in it that you can’t really see but that’s another reason not to keep this one since I think they’d be too similar to want or need both.

Now onto the good stuff, I was pretty happy to see this included because it’s a product I’ve wanted to try but have been hesitant about purchasing myself. I say hesitant because I really love the Hollywood Flawless Filter and there’s a shade light enough in that product for my skin tone but I wasn’t sure if this would be light enough for me when looking at swatches online, this is like an amped up version of the Hollywood Flawless Filter. I actually still haven’t tried it but if you start seeing it in the product details on my Instagram then you’ll know it worked for me (fingers crossed). I love a glossy skin highlighter and that’s exactly what this product is so I can’t wait to try it and will be doing so ASAP!

I’ve used several samples of this moisturizer before and it’s actually a really good moisturizer to use as a makeup base (which is the whole point of this product). I would never purchase the full size because it’s super expensive and has a strong smell, even though there’s no added fragrance, so I don’t think it’s best suited for sensitive skin, which I have so hopefully it doesn’t give me any irritation since my skin seems to get more and more sensitive the older I get. I will eventually get around to using it but I’m not in any rush. I wasn’t overjoyed with this product being included but I’m not mad at it and I’ll definitely use it at some point.

I’ve only ever had a mini of this mascara before and I loved it so I’m really happy I’ll have a whole tube to use. I have medium-ish length lashes that aren’t super thick and they will not hold a curl at all but this mascara does not weigh my lashes down and for that I love it. It’s not super volumizing, unless you layer it up a bunch, but it’s just a really good everyday/any occasion mascara for me. A lot of people don’t like this mascara because it smudges but I will only wear waterproof, water resistant or tubing mascaras on my lower lashes since they’re on the longer side and always have one going so I’ve never had to contend with that and it’s never smudged on my upper lashes so I think it just depends on personal preference but I really like it and will gladly use it.

Okay, wow first off packaging goals. They should definitely go more with this vibe in the future because it’s stunning, still keeps the classy aspect with the rose gold packaging but has a really cool edgy graphic. I was super hyped to see this included, of course most excited for the eyeshadow palette which is why I saved it for last. I actually almost bought this several times because I loved all the looks I was seeing with it online but just couldn’t justify it because I already have a lot of eyeshadow palettes and still haven’t used quite a few of them so I really didn’t need another one but I’m super happy to have this one. This photo is not doing these shadows justice, most of the shades in this palette are super sparkly and metallic and look gorgeous. I don’t think it’s the most user friendly palette since there aren’t any mattes and most people prefer to have a few mattes in a palette but it doesn’t bother me since I have other options I can pull from if I want to incorporate some mattes (like the Charlotte Tilbury The Sophisticate Luxury Eyeshadow Palette which is all neutral mattes). I like the Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow formulas and can’t wait to crack into this palette!

Took this by accident but it shows off the holographic packaging best so I had to include it!

Charlotte Tilbury packaging is really hard to photograph because of how reflective it is so enjoy this reflection of my camera in the Magic Cream lid.

Okay, now let’s talk numbers because when it comes to the Mystery Boxes I’m a numbers gal. In short, you’re basically getting about 30% off; the box, before tax, cost $129 but has a $183 value. To break it down even more let’s look at a chart:

This chart shows what percentage each item added to the total value. The gloss, which goes for $22, ended up making up about 12% of the overall value of the box and cost me about $15.508 (yes, I’m using three decimal places to make the math work better). The Beauty Light Wand costs $38 and made up around 20.8% of the value so it cost me about $26.787. The Magic Cream and mascara both cost $29 and each created about 15.8% value to the box and cost me $20.443 each with the price I paid. Finally the eyeshadow palette, which costs $65, made up the largest percentage of 35.5% and cost me around $45.82 out of my $129. I hope that all makes sense and that my math was right…I did go to college for art after all.

All in all it’s okay value but nothing spectacular like you get with other mystery boxes. You can get all these products for up to 20% off at Sephora twice a year if you shop them during the sales so to me it’s not a whole lot better than that. It’s not horrible though and it did get me three products that I either like or wanted to try so I’m not mad at it. As I said previously this was my favorite Charlotte Tilbury Mystery Makeup Box thus far and hope any future ones are more in this realm (I particularly like that the only skincare item was a mini). I’ve inserted some videos from Charlotte Tilbury down below so that you can see them in action since I haven’t been able to use any of them yet. If you bought this box, what do you think of it? And if you didn’t buy it, do you wish you had? Leave me your answer and any questions you might have in the comments down below and I will see you next time!
